All-in-One Self-Powered Smart Micro/Nano-Systems
In view of clean energy sources to power the Internet of things, recently ambient energy harvesting mechanisms based on micro/nano technologies have attracted so much attention due their unique features and properties. They are named micro/nano power source to efficiently harvest and convert biomechanical energy into remarkable electricity, which is thus clean without any source of pollution and sustainable. However, in order to make a real impact in daily life applications, further improvements are needed in particular for output enhancement and manufacture simplification. This talk will introduce our research activities to respond these challenges by developing large-scale mass-fabrication technologies, exploring eco-friendly low-cost materials and proposing hybrid mechanisms. More than effective energy harvesting, we also focus on inventing self-powered integrated micro/nano-systems, which combine separated functional components, including a complete chain of sensing-proceeding-responding as well as power sources. Thus, this talk also explores the feasibility of “all-in-one” self-powered smart microsystems.
Xiaosheng Zhang is currently a Professor at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). He received the Ph.D. degree in Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics from Peking University in 2014. And then he joined École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, as a research scientist, and also served as a research associate at The University of Tokyo, Japan. In 2017, he was awarded with the Hundred-Talent Professorship by the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Dr. Xiaosheng Zhang’s research field is micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), and his research interests cover the micro-nano integrated fabrication technology and its application for smart microsystems, which are the significant interdisciplinary frontiers. The scientific merits of Dr. Zhang’s innovative work can be summarized to provide valuable approaches to address the essential issues of micro-nano integrated fabrication and hybrid energy harvesting technologies for micro-nano electronics and smart self-powered nodes of Internet of Things (IoT), respectively. Based on the above contributions, Dr. Zhang has published over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers, including 2 ESI highly-cited papers as first author, 2 scientific books with Wiley and Springer, authorized 22 patents. Dr. Zhang’s work has been reported by scientific medium as highlight news for many times, and it was also emphasized by National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in its official website.
