Exotic Lasing and Field Manipulation at Microscale
Laser is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century, whcih has wide applications range from nuclear fusion, manufacturing, optical communication, high-precision metrology, spectroscopy, and quantum information processing and so on. Advanced fundamental understanding on light-matter interaction provides a powerful toolbox for exotic lasing phenomena and field manipulation at microscale. In this talk, I will first discuss the intrinsic merit of microscale lasers, the key characteristics of them and the underlying physics. Then I will discuss eigenmode engineering of nanolasers, which can lead to novel inner laser cavity field and/or emission beam synthesis. Furthermore, ensembles of nanolasers operating in unison can provide a macroscopic response that would not be possible in conventional lasers. I will also discuss Jordan vector based radiation mechanism and it enabled exotic light source. I will conclude the talk with a perspective on the field.
Ren-Min Ma is a Boya assistant professor at PKU. His lab focuses on the research of exotic lasing phenomena and field manipulation at microscale and their applications in spectroscopy, commutation and computing. Ma lab discovered a new light reflection mechanism of band-inversion-induced reflection, and demonstrated high performance topological bulk lasers. Ma lab also discovered a Jordan vector based radiation mechanism, which breaks conventional notion on light-matter interaction. Over the years, Ma lab contributed to the development of plasmonic nanolasers which can lead to laser device with fast operation and high energy efficiency at molecular scale.
Dr. Ma received his PhD degree in Physics from Peking University in 2009. He was a postdoc researcher at UC Berkeley during 2009 to 2014 before joining Peking University as a faculty.
